This is a new service that is evolving according to demand. Lockdown and beyond has presented some problems for our migrant community. We have been able to help by using our other services, Foodbank, housing, Building Financial Capability, and also advocating to internal and external government agencies via Heartlands.
We intend to take this one step further, and to grow this service beyond sorting immediate need. We will do this by incorporating social aspects that will help strengthen and connect our migrant community, both to each other and the wider community.
We will run literacy groups to teach people from non-English speaking backgrounds how to speak, read and write English. (ESOL) trained, and we will happily accommodate pre-schoolers who accompany parents.
We will help achieve a joint, identified goal of making Kaikōura a welcoming and inclusive community, by joining together, respecting each other, and by celebrating the diversity of all cultures in Kaikōura.
